Why do some children get motion sickness?
Not all children have this sensitivity. It rarely occurs in infants, most commonly affecting preschoolers and toddlers. The condition tends to get better as the child gets older, or they at least are more able to cope with it.Note that motion sickness can be hereditary. So keep that in mind if you are planning your first car trip (and you can use MotionEaze for yourself, as well).
Motion sickness occurs because our brains are programmed to anticipate motion based on what we see. Strapped snugly into the back seat of a car, your child may see only the back of the seat in front of him, which, relative to his own body, doesn't seem to be moving. Meanwhile, his body feels the twists of the road. The confusion between what he sees and what he feels makes him feel nauseated.
Signs and symptoms of motion sickness
Usually children start by getting pale. Yawning, restlessness and a cold sweat are also clues. These are followed by an upset stomach and eventually nausea and vomiting. Remember that your child can’t always convey how they are feeling – keep an eye on her.Tips for traveling with children
- Motion sickness tends to be worse on a full or empty stomach. It’s best to have a light snack before the motion.
- Keep the car a comfortable temperature – remember that the back seat may be different than what you feel in the front.
- Bright sun and glare can make the nausea worse. Try covering the windows.
- Play travel games that involve looking outside, to keep your child’s mind occupied. Singing songs together also often helps.
- Spray bottles or individual battery powered fans are fun as they cool kids off.
- Take breaks as soon as your child shows symptoms. Sometimes this can settle her down enough to be able to continue without problems.
- Most kids feel better if they can look out the window. Sometimes a middle seat gives more view of the road.
- It’s better to be where the ride is less bumpy. If you’re on an airplane, sit over the wing. Front cars are best on a train and the front seat is best in a car. Keep the child on deck on a boat, avoiding the stern or bow.
- Open windows for fresh air whenever possible.
- Being dehydrated or hungry can lead to a feeling of nausea and headaches. Bring along plenty of water and healthy snacks.
- Make frequent stops. Some children can only drive for an hour or two before starting to feel sick – take a break before they hit that point!
- Apply MotionEaze, it’s NEVER too late to use it. Apply a drop even after symptoms set in and it’s still as safe and effective as when taken prior to symptoms.
And if your child feels sick before you have a chance to give MotionEaze:
- Reassure her that she will likely outgrow this condition. Tell her that she is not alone so that she doesn't feel isolated or ashamed.
- Have a supply of plastic bags ready just in case. Moistened towels or wet cloths will help cool him off and feel better.
- Be ready – if your child becomes pale, sweaty or complains of nausea, open a window for fresh air and take a break if possible so that she can walk around outside.
- Give your child small sips of water to rehydrate.
- Put a drop of MotionEaze on the child’s head behind each ear for relief in 5 minutes.
- Remember that motion sickness is a normal response and one that a child can’t control.
